Halloween has never been a favorite among holidays for me. Except in college and law school when it gave us girls an excuse to dress like a strumpet and party hop all evening (don’t judge, we’ve all done stupid things), I’ve generally not done much when it came to Halloween. But since having kids, I’ve really enjoyed decorating my home in small ways and the kids really love it too.
Even now, though, I refuse to decorate with spooky or ghoulish decor. I’m not a fan of anything that celebrates evil or makes light of violent acts (like a dead body or a bloody scene). I also don’t believe we should open up our children to thinking things like that are okay, even if it’s fake and just for Halloween. So my decor style when it comes to this particular holiday always leans toward chic or cute Halloween decor with maybe a bit of creep (like spiders or snakes).
I’m not the only one who takes the spook out of Halloween decor, either! Here are some of my favorite non-spooky Halloween decor ideas from around the interwebs.

I really love the simplicity of this front porch, but it sure makes a Halloween statement, doesn’t it? That wreath is awesome with the flying bats and I love the bare twigs behind the pumpkins. This is non-spooky, chic Halloween decor at it’s finest!
I just love this simple bookcase vignette by Centsational Girl. She added spiderwebs, spiders, an owl and ravens among lovely white pumpkins and lanterns. It is so simple but completely perfect and very Halloween-y!
For my front porch this year, I added a “trick-or-treat” banner above the door and my simple “boo” wreath. I stuck a pair of witches legs in my mum and added my lighted jack-o-lanterns (yes, one of them is a football…husbands, right?). I didn’t have to remove any of my fall decor, I just rearranged and added a few Halloween goodies and called it a day!
Gosh, I love this vignette! I love the old, chippy window and the old books. I love the shadow of the tree in the window and the little spiders creeping around everywhere. And the raven is perfect. Just love this!
I absolutely love the creativity on display here! The giant spider web on the front porch is genius. I also love the bigger than life spiders, especially the one above the door. I’m usually not a fan of ghosts, but these are so cute that I think I’d keep them. And I just love the trick or treat signs made from old bifold doors!
This is a super cute way to add a bit of Halloween in your decor. This blogger team made their own book covers (they’re free to download on her site!) and then covered books they already had. Top it with a cute lantern and some other simple decor and you’re set for Halloween.
Oh, Martha. She’s always so good, isn’t she? I love this simple set up with the bats hanging from the porch ceiling and the simple black brooms resting on the side of the house. The pops of color from the array of pumpkins breaks up the black and white color scheme beautifully.
This is my mantel for this year. I just added some spray painted bird’s houses I picked up at Michael’s along with some black birds and spiders along the mantel piece. My kids begged me to buy the little ghosts at Micheal’s and I thought they were benign enough so I gave in. On my hearth, I added a couple of my hand painted signs. Easy, not spooky, just a little creep and we’re in business!
These are just a few examples of all the ways you can add Halloween decor to your home without getting all spooky or gory. I love that these ideas are easy and a lot of them are DIY as well. I hope you have gained some inspiration for creating your own non-spooky Halloween house this year!
